הכורכומין, המרכיב העיקרי של צמח התבלין ההודי המוכר כורכום, הוא התבלין הנחקר ביותר בהקשר לסרטן. מחקרים אפידמיולוגיים מצביעים על שכיחות קטנה יותר של מחלות סרטן באוכלוסיות הצורכות כורכום. בו זמנית מראים מחקרי מעבדה כי הוא פועל כנגד מגוון מחלות סרטן.

מנגנוני הפעילות: הכורכומין פועל במגוון מנגנונים לאורך כל המסלול של התפתחות תאי הסרטן. אחד המרכזיים שבהם הוא חסימת פעילותו של החלבון NF Kappa B, הנחשב לגורם בעל תפקיד מרכזי בתהליכי דלקת ובחלוקת התאים. בדרך זו הכורכומין מעכב הן את התהליך הדלקתי המעורב בתהליכים הסרטניים והן את שכפול תאי הסרטן והתפשטותם.

עוד נמצא שהכורכומין מעודד אפופטוזיס (מוות תאי מתוכנן) בתאים הסרטניים (מצב שבאופן רגיל אינו מתרחש בתאים אלה), מדכא את שגשוג תאי הסרטן, מעכב יצירת כלי דם חדשים המזינים את הגידול הסרטני, ואף מפחית את עמידותם לכימותרפיה ולהקרנות. כמו כן מחקרים מראים שהכורכומין מגן גם על איברים בריאים, כמו הכבד, הכליות, ריריות הפה והלב, מהרעילות הכרוכה בטיפולי כימותרפיה והקרנות.

בטיחות ותופעות לוואי: הכורכומין משמש כבר מאות בשנים כתבלין וכתוסף תזונה ונחשב לבעל פרופיל בטיחות גבוה. תופעות הלוואי הידועות נחשבות למזעריות, ובהן אי נוחות בקיבה, בעיקר כשהוא ניטל במינונים גבוהים או לתקופה ממושכת.

מינון: אין המלצה ברורה. בחלק מהמחקרים קיבלו המשתתפים עד 12 גרם ללא תופעות לוואי משמעותיות, אך כמה מחקרים קליניים מצביעים על כך שדי ב־500־3,000 מ"ג כורכומין כדי להשיג השפעה. מומלץ ליטול תוספי כורכומין המשולבים עם פיפרין (החומר הפעיל בפלפל שחור), המשפר את הזמינות הביולוגית באופן ניכר. כמו כן רצוי ליטול אותו עם הארוחות, ובפרט עם מזונות המכילים שומן, שמשפרים את ספיגתו.

Turmeric and Curcumin has been shown to have a wide spectrum of biological actions.
Its anticancer effect is mainly mediated through induction of apoptosis.

Clinically, curcumin has already been used to reduce post-operative inflammation.
Safety evaluation studies indicate that both turmeric and curcumin are well tolerated at
very high dose without any toxic effects.

Thus, both turmeric and curcumin have the potential for the development of modern medicine for the treatment of various diseases.

Turmeric for cancer

Curcumin and anticancer activity:

One form of curcumin's activity is preventing the action of the nuclear factor

NF-KAPPAB. When this factor is activated, it affects abnormal inflammatory activity

which leads to various pathological conditions, such as arthritis and cancer. In addition, there are who Argue that to this factor there is an impact on the formation of symptoms who are related to Cancer, such as loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, depression, anxiety, Neuropathic pain and other conditions.(1)

There are who attribute some of the anti-cancer activity of curcumin as a direct action

of the active blocking of NF-KAPPAB.

The production blocking of this factor returns part of the Cancer cells to "normal". Furthermore this block also prevents a Metastasis. (2)

Curcumin for cancer

Curcumin's activity was tested extensively in in-vitro studies (laboratory testing)
showed a number of activities:

* Preventing activation of specific genes that cause cancer (Genes for NF-κB, STAT3, COX2).

* Prevention of tumor cell from multiplying.

* Prevent the transformation of normal cells to cancer cells.

* Destruction of cells that have become cancer cells.

* Prevent the spread of tumors to other organs.

* Prevent the development of the necessary blood supply to the cancer cell development

These activities demonstrated against most of the known types of cancer, such as breast cancer, Prostate cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, and more. (3)
